Glendale district social media monitoring for students safety

At the glendale middle and high school, the district has hired a firm to monitor the students social media. They are looking for any kind of bulling that could be harmful to students or possibly ending ones life. The firm that has been hired is called Geo Listening, which is a company that is agents cyber bulling, suicides, and drugs that occur in social media. Their main goal is to protect kids from making bad choices, keeping them safe, and making schools bully free.

Now this sounds like a good idea, but there is one thing that is wrong, they did not send out any type of letter confirming that this will be happening to the homes of the students. Its not like they were invading their privacy because it is out there for the world to see, its just that they were not aware of this happening and people got mad. Some students agreed and other did not. Young Cho, 16, a junior at Hover High, said that although she supports the effort to help keep the students safe, monitoring them for less severe violations of school rules goes far. "We all know social media is not a private place, not really a safe place. But, its not the same as being in school. It's students' expression of their own thoughts and feelings to their friends. For the school to intrude in that area- I understand that they can do it, but I don't think it is right." Chris Frydyrch, chief executive of Geo Listening says that this company has been making a big impact on the schools around the United States. And that there have been less suicides and bulling situations then before. They company only monitors public posts and isn't invading into private accounts so it is not considered an invasion of privacy.
